The ancient ideogram

The ancient character depicts a younger sister leaving her clan to follow her elder sister to a prince as a secondary wife, according to the sororal polygyny custom of the Bronze Age. "Gui Mei" symbolises a situation marked by a choice made for reasons external to what is chosen, and the warning of a fundamentally lopsided, subordinate position.

The marginal position and the lack of control

This hexagram describes an uncomfortable phase in which you do not hold the cards. You are engaged in a situation (a new job, a relationship) for outside considerations (financial urgency, the other's opportunism), and you deceive yourself about your real importance: you are only a stopgap, a spare wheel (like the younger sister taken as part of the lot). Any offensive initiative will lead to disaster.

The message of the Judgment is unambiguous: "Expeditions lead to an impasse. No place is profitable". The strategy consists in becoming aware of your blind spot, lowering your ego, and adapting strictly to orders without seeking to direct the manoeuvre. It is by accepting this position of "the lame one who can still walk" (first line) that you will avoid the traps and save the essential.

The energetic composition

Structurally, the hexagram superposes the trigram of Thunder (Zhen, the violent impulse, the eldest son) above, over the trigram of the Marsh (Dui, joyful exchange, the youngest daughter) below. Desire or excitement (Dui) drives the action (Zhen), creating a major energetic misalignment. The challenge for the consultant is to decode the objective organisation of the situation so as not to end up the dupe.

Line 6 — yin (top line) The basket held out is empty, the sheep slaughtered yields no blood: nothing advantageous. If it changes, this line leads to hexagram 38 — Opposition.
