The stranger on the road; small success through reserve. The wanderer forms no attachments and keeps his measure.

The ancient ideogram

The primitive character depicts a man with a walking staff making his way along an unknown mountainside path, stopping briefly by a makeshift campfire before setting off again. "Lu" symbolises the condition of the expatriate, the itinerant or the stranger, who possesses no roots and no permanent rights in the place where they find themselves, and must navigate by sight.

Expatriation and the loss of fixed bearings

This hexagram corresponds to a phase of transition, of geographical or professional instability (a journey abroad, freelance work, a period of relational vagueness). You have no solid anchoring, the surrounding milieu does not share your codes, and you are tolerated but not integrated. The slightest misstep could provoke your immediate exclusion.

The counsel of the figure

Show reserve, tact and detachment

The traveller's strategy rests on humility, discretion and clarity of conduct. The text counsels the Accomplished Being to be "sober in applying penalties and not to prolong disputes". Do not try to impose your rules or to accumulate cumbersome material goods in this nomadic phase. Be courteous with the locals, keep your inner freedom intact, and pass through the situation with lightness.

The energetic composition

Structurally, the figure places the trigram of Light/Fire (Li, volatile clarity) below, beneath the trigram of the Mountain (Gen, stillness) above. Fire burns on the Mountain, moving quickly without taking root, consuming the dry vegetation before going out. The challenge for the consultant is to accept this temporary precariousness as a unique occasion for refining their adaptability.

Line 6 — yang (top line) The bird burns its nest; the wanderer first laughs, then wails; he loses his ox through carelessness: misfortune. If it changes, this line leads to hexagram 62 — Preponderance of the Small.
