The ancient character depicts a foot crossing the frontier to return to its starting point, or a bud showing within a protective matrix. It symbolises the winter solstice, the precise moment when darkness has reached its apogee and the first spark of light (the nascent Yang) reappears in the depths of the earth.
The tipping point and rebirth
This hexagram announces the beginning of a new cycle after a period of trial or stripping away. The turning movement operates of itself, naturally and spontaneously. The positive force is back, but it is still extremely fragile, like a newborn requiring absolute protection in order to grow.
Protect the seed and suspend activity
The required strategy is paradoxical: faced with this renewal, one must not rush into action, on pain of destroying the seed. The text notes that the Ancient Kings "closed the passes" at the solstice, forbidding the movements of merchants. You must mark a pause, avoid untimely initiatives, and let this new energy settle quietly within you before expressing it outwardly.
Energetically, the figure places the trigram of Thunder (Zhen, the nascent impulse, the arouser) in first position, beneath the massive block of Earth (Kun, the receptive matrix). The movement begins at the very bottom, in the heart of darkness. The challenge for the consultant is to respect the slowness of this incubation, understanding that haste would spoil the promised fecundity.
